Markus Zberg might be the unknown former Gerolsteiner rider who was client of the Matschiner-network
http://www.radsport-news.com/sport/sportnews_59318.htm (in German)
He's heavily suspected to have bought DynEpo from Matschiner. So says Neue Züricher Zeitung, maybe the most serious and respected Swiss newspaper. The Swiss Anti-Doping agency is trying to get the Austrian report that seems to proof the connection. Zberg's former manager Hans-Michael Holczer says he's in contact with his former rider through his lawyer.

We are getting the news in this Austrian blood doping scandal, drop by drop. The fact is, that the SOKO investigation report written by Austrian police, so far only is available for the court case, that soon are expected to start against some of the leaders of the doping network. Eventhough details continue to leak to the press, there is nothing the sports court can do about it, until the report is made available to them from the civil court in Austria. Fortunately the Austrian NADA has filed a complaint to make sure they become an active part of the court case, and promised to collaborate with other nations antidoping orgnanisations to share the info they get.
To make a long story short, we shall however prepare that it might take at least 1 year, before those riders who are found guilty by the investigation, also can be convicted as such in the sports court. According to the Austrian law, it only became illegal for their athletes to dope from August 2008, so we wont learn the names of the involved riders through public charges. This is a matter for the sports court to sort out afterwords. And frustrating as it is, they can only start their work, once the civil court has concluded their case.
According to the new German article about Markus Zberg, the evidense against him should rocket through the sky. The SOKO report has outlined 3 witnesses, who confirm that DynEpo was deliverd to Markus Zberg in March 2008. Bernhard Kohl admitted to have filed the order on behalf of Zberg. Matschiner confirmed to have bought the doping, and a doping curier confirmed to have delivered it personally to Markus Zberg. Adding all this together its impossible not to be convicted guilty by the sports court. After reading through CAS decisions in similair cases from "Operation Oil for Drugs", this kind of evidense will without a doubt release a 2-year suspension for "attempted doping use". There is no way for Markus Zberg to escape it, and I speculate his recent decision to retire also was based on that.
EDIT: In my update of the case back at page 11 (Apr.2009), you will also find a link to the Austrian newspaper Kurier, where they claim to posses a confession from a person, who transported a blood bag from Vienna to France, and helped to blood dope Georg Totschnig (Gerolsteiner), the day before he won his Tour stage at Ax3 Domaines in 2005. So there might have been a link between Gerolsteiner and Matschiner already back then. On the other hand, it could also just have something to do with Georg Totschnig being an Austrain rider.

Let's hope they get the evidence they need and prosecute someone this time, they (spanish authorities) really do seem to be pretty poor at running investigations !!
It would be very interesting to know who the riders were that he had phone calls and txt's messages from.......valv-piti maybe?
I just read the articel from Interviu (www.interviu.es/default.asp?idpublicacio_PK=39&idioma=CAS&idnoticia_PK=58704&idseccio_PK=547&h=090907), but unfortunately they had no additional big news to the story, compared to the story posted by Cyclingnews. But I will now give a short summary.
They report that the Spanish police made a surveillance of Dr.Jesús Losa, but that a Spanish judge ordered the surveillance to stop in May 2009, as they apparently couldnt submit enough evidense. The surveillance started after Duenas named him as his supplier of EPO, after he was tested positive in Tour de France 2008. The Spanish police also somehow discovered, that Jesús Losa had injected the women cyclist Maribel Moreno in the airport, before she travelled to the Olympics and got caught EPO positive by a surprise test. Finaly the Spanish article add, that Jesus Losa recieved a SMS message from Maribel Moreno's coach Carlos Hernandez (after being interrogated by the police): "If the fúcking police interrogate you, you know you dont have anything to do with it. They are bastards".
While Maribel Moreno chose not to collaborate with the police, its reported that Duenas made a complete collaboration. He admitted to have payed €6000 plus bonus for results, to Jesus Losa. In return the doctor gave him an injection with an "unkown substance", and a bottle of the testosterone precursor DHEA to use during Tour de France. Losa told him he would never test positive if he followed his instructions.
Finally the Spanish article also state, that the police had 4 doctors under suspicion, and now consider that the battle against doping is being lost. The problem is, that "successes in sport, fair or not, generate collective euphoria for milllion of people and a good image for politicians".

(Hi, I'm new, huge fan of Saxo. I read the forum everyday, just a bit too shy to talk in english ; so I apologize for my poor english.)
About this subjet, the newspaper El Pais gave a few names in an article yesterday, concerning riders who exchanged sms with this doctor Losa. There are a few Caisse d'Epargne boys mentioned by El Pais : Luis Leon Sanchez, Daniel Moreno (not Valverde). But they're also giving the name of one Saxo-Bank : Kolobnev.
The complete article is here : http://www.elpais.com/articulo/deportes/fallida/investigacion/Jesus/Losa/elpepudep/20091020elpepidep_8/Tes It's more precise than the web article from Interviu. |

Thanks for the information, and don't worry about the english, we understand you so it's no problem.
It's very worrying that Kolobnev is named, even if he's not implicated it will be a blow to his image. It would be very painful to miss him next year too.

Alberto Fernandez de la Puebla, the Spanish Fuji-Servetto-rider who was to join the Italian Professional Continental team Carmiooro-A-Style from the 2010 season, has been suspended after a non-negative out of competition doping test performed on October 15. The test apparently contained traces of EPO, and de la Puebla was object to a focused testing due to his values in his biological passport.

Dopingnetwork of Dr.Lazzaro dismanteled: The Italian police last year in May, caught the father of the Gerolsteiner rider Andrea Moletta, to be in possesion of an injection needle with the doping substance Lutralef. The rider was in the most descrete way released by Gerolsteiner, but of course his father explained the doping found in his car was only for himself, and not for his son. Several months later, none of them had recieved any kind of suspension or punishment, and it seemed like the police didnt get anything out of the case. At Oct.31 we however now recieved the second part of the story.
When the police caught the father of Andrea Moletta, they also found evidense of the seized doping being bought directly from Dr. Enrico Lazzaro. So they decided to keep a close eye with him. When the police in the past 3 months also conducted a telephone wire tap and video surveillance, they indeed found a doping network to exist around the doctor. For instance they video taped, when he manipulated the blood of a 15yr swimmer, by boosting it with Ozone (a new bizarre doping technique). When the police raided his office, they found a database of clients, but just like Dr.Fuentes, he was precautious enough to have given them code names. Further details are not yet known, but I expect we will learn more when the police has ended the invistigation. www.cyclingnews.com/news/italian-doctor-under-investigation-for-administering-ozone-therapy
Dr. Enrico Lazzaro was in 2001 team doctor of Liquigas (that among others had Rebellin in the roster), and got accused for having helped the Liquigas team with systematic doping. In the Giro 2001 the police did a giant raid called the "San Remo Blitz", where several riders and staff were caught red handed. As part of this raid, the court and public were also presented with incriminating transcripts of telephone calls and video surveillance of Enrico Lazzaro giving doping to Liquigas riders. Unfortunately the police however had made a procedural mistake, when they performed the surveillance without first getting approval by the court, and hence they couldnt use the material as evidense in the court case against Lazzaro. Fortunately other riders and athletes however witnessed, that he had supplied them with doping, and in June 2005 he was convicted a prison time of 1 year and 4 months for his illegal pracsis. http://ricerca.repubblica.it/repubblica/archivio/repubblica/2005/06/11/lazzaro-medico-al-giro-condanna-anno-mesi.100lazzaro.html
So Lazzaro returned as a sports doctor after serving his prison time in January 2007. But as he today already was caught again of repeated crimes, he unfortunately didnt learn anything from his first mistake.
QuickStep systematicly doped in 2005: New interview with Belgian senator Dedecker, has revealed that Dimitri De Fauw was the secret witness who informed him about systematic doping at QuickStep in 2005. The story got public in January 2007, and inspite of Dedecker trying to protect his source as secret, he reported that the QuickStep team somehow were able to identify De Fauw as the rider who "broke the omerta". In fact Dedecker firmly believe, that the depression problems of De Fauw, mainly was caused by being "frozen out" by former friends and colleagues in the cycling world. Dedecker also revealed, that he is in possesion of a long taped interview between the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws and De Fauw from January 2007, where he tells the entire story of the doping practice at QuickStep in 2005. www.feltet.dk/index.php?id_parent=1&id=28&id_nyhed=22857
In 2007 QuickStep and Patrick Lefevere launched a civil court case against the newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws, for printing "a false story" leading to big damage of the Qucikstep teams image, and the loss of a new sponsor. 2 weeks ago, the civil court in Belgium ruled that the story couldnt be proofed as true, and that Het Laatste Nieuws should pay a compensation of 500,000 euro to Lefevere, 100,000 euro to the team doctor Ivan Van Mol, and a symbolic amount of 1 euro to all riders from the QuickStep team in 2005. Then only 1 week ago, Dimitri De Fauw committed suicide. And thereby it feed the speculation, that his suicide indeed was related with the negative outcome of the case. At the moment its hard to say, if/when Dedecker will release the taped interview to proof, that the story told by De Fauw about systematic doping at QuickStep in 2005, was true. But even without further proof, I think its very difficult to find arguments why we shouldnt believe in the stories by Dedecker and De Fauw!
Once again I have to repeat, that we already know from the report in 2008 written by the doping laboratory in Lausanne, that aproximately 50% of the doping samples showed sign of blood manipulation back in Tour de France 2005! This number fortunately decreased significant after Operation Puerto got dismantled. But when we know the number was as high as 50% in 2005. And when we know they also at that point of time had systematic doping at: Liberty Seguros + Kelme (Operation Puerto), T-mobile (Freiburg), Rabobank (Operation Wiener Blut), then it would really come as no big surprise if Dedecker is able to proof, that QuickStep also doped systematicly in 2005.
With all the knowledge we have today, my best advice is to be honest about the past. The doping situation in Cycling has significantly improved to the better, after we had the "cleaning up" in Operation Puerto, and with the biological passport being launched as a new measure in 2008. So instead of "freezing out" riders who are honest about the past, it would really suit the Cycling World to start being honest about the extent of the problems also in 1999-2006. The public is intelligent, and will be able to differentiate.
If its communicated widely to the public, that the majority of riders doped in 2005, and thats why QuickStep also had their own internal system where they helped riders to dope. Then I believe most of us can forgive QuickStep for that, and give them a 2nd chance, because the context was different in 2005 compared to 2009. But can we forgive QuickStep when they enforce a black visioned Omerta, freeze out honest riders, and continue to lie about the past? And what does it signal, when QuickStep behave this way?
Priamo suspended 4 years by CAS: My final story today is about Priamo. Last year the CONI prosecutor demanded to the Italian TNA, that he should be suspended 4 years due to being in possesion (violation 2.6) and taking part of administration (violation 2.8) of doping. Emanuelle Sella had been caught for using CERA in July 2008, and made a full collaboration with the authoraties, where he named his teammate Priamo as his doping supplier. Thereby the suspension of Emanuelle Sella was shortened from 2 years to 1 year, and after a quick raid the authoraties indeed found proof of Priamo being a drug dealer. At first, the Italian TNA however didnt find the evidence strong enough to convict Priamo guilty, and thereby acquitted him in February 2009. This decision was then appealed by the CONI prosecutor to CAS, who also had new evidense to present (being an investigation report by the Public prosecutor in Padua), to back his claim. Based on that, CAS today ruled that the evidense was indeed clear and sufficient, and thereby imposed a 4 year suspension of Priamo (from Feb.2009-2013). www.tas-cas.org/en/infogenerales.asp/4-3-3717-1092-4-1-1/5-0-1092-15-1-1/
The case is interesting in many ways. First of all because it appear, that not only did it help to clean up the CSF Group team, but apparently Priamo was also part of a bigger network. The Italian police found evidense that Priamo had bought doping products by the amateur rider Paul Bonin, who was part of a larger doping network. In this doping network, it was the amateur rider Aleksandar Nikacevic (former professional rider at Alessio and former coach of the Serbian U23 national team), who bought and transported all the doping products from Serbia. This network was dismantled in July 2009, where the police arrested several persons, and also found them in posession of large amount of doping substances (incl. Viagra).
The fact the Italian prosecutor in Padua has requested the extra analysis of 82 urine samples from Giro d'Italia 2008, where 7 returned suspectful results, and then called for the laboratorium in Lausanne to also make a CERA check of the blood samples stored for those 7 riders, could also be related to the investigation of Priamo. For the moment, I actualy feel almost certain about it.
But I want to stress, that for the moment I have no sources to confirm that the Priamo case, and CERA analysis of the blood belonging to 7 suspectful Giro riders, are related to each other. My strong feeling is however based on the fact, that it was the Padua prosecutor demanding the extra CERA test to be done, and that the same prosecutor also work with the investigation against Dr.Lazzaro, and finaly also managed to dismantle the network existing around Priamo. Adding all this together, it makes me speculate that the recent cases to some degree all are interrelated.

CONI prosecutor has opened up a case against 5 from the Swiss continental team: Nazionale Elettronica-New Slot-Hadimec! One thing we all have to applaud, is the fact that CONI and the justice system in Italy, has become both fast, reliable and efficient, in the last couple of years. Today we have the CONI prosecutor opening up a sports trial against 5 persons, who the Padua prosecutor had identified in his invistigation report only two weeks ago, as being heavily implicated in a new doping network discovered.
The manager of the Nazionale Elettronica-New Slot-Hadimec team: Donato Giuliani, has been recommended to get suspended for life, due to having committed the crime: possesion (violation 2.6), transportation (violation 2.7) and administration (violation 2.8) of doping.
The 2 riders Marco Ghiselli and Armendo Camelo are both charged for "attempted use" (violation 2.2), possesion (violation 2.6), transportation (violation 2.7) and administration (violation 2.8), and has been recommended a life time suspension for the crime.
Finaly the 2 riders Americo Novembrino and Julian David Munoz Giraldo, only committed the crime of "attempted use" (violation 2.2) and possesion (violation 2.6), and will thus only be required to get a standard suspension, being 4 years due to "aggrevated circumstances".
