I have made a database of all his team mates during those years, and cross checked with the names of all managers, sports directors and assisting sports directors from Tour De France 2007. I found two positive matches from the RMO team in 1987:
Vincent Lavenu (now sportsdirector for AG2R) Gilles Mas (now assisting sports director for AG2R)
What about Theo de Rooy, who was on Panasonic in '85, with the feathers referencing Rasmussen's "chicken" feathers?
Yes, it could also be Theo De Rooy. I missed his name in my first screening, since his name is now written as Theo De Rooij. |

Eddy Mazzoleni and Domenico Quagliariello have both been banned for 2 years due to their involvement in "Oils for Drugs"
http://sporten.tv2.dk/cykling/article.php/id-11131248.html?forside
Does anybody why it seems that everyone who is involved in that affair gets 2 years but Di Luca only got three months? As far as I know the evidence against Di Luca was quite strong too? |

Those few riders only getting 3 months, are only convicted for being clients of a doping suspended doctor. In those cases with sufficient evidense, the penalty is always 2 years for a first time offence or lifetime for a second time offense. I know from Di Lucas case, that they wanted to use video recordings as evidense, especially the one where the doctor prepare some needles with EPO to Di Luca. However, some paragraphs in Italy apparently prevented them for using the video evidense. The recorded phone calls with Di Luca were also not as incriminating as the one with Mazzoleni. Most of us who have followed the case, are however not in doubt, that they are equally guilty. |

I told a couple months ago about Joerg Jaksche interview in Finnish tv. The program which contains also a lot about this famous Freiburg clinic can now be seen here:

As I watched the above link I found out that it was not the whole original program but the JJ interview only. And all auf Deutsch. Enjoy

| Does anyone know anything about Landis? As far as I know he raced few MTB races this year, but I think he hasnt had any contact with pro teams since TDF 2006? Its 2 years now and its time to see him back. I know CSC is not an option for him anymore, but I would like to see him racing again soon. |

Furthermore, Landis is currently awaiting the final CAS decision in his case, which is expected to arrive in June 2008. Landis was suspended from Jan.2007 to Jan.2009 by his national federation, and as kxtr writes above, he is expected never to return for a ProTour team, since this will only be allowed from Jan.2011. The long procedure of doping trials, is sadly enough still hunting the entire cycling world. Personaly I burried the Landis case long ago, since neither the rider nor the case, deserves any more thoughts or consideration. |

June 22 or 29th are the 2 dates tossed around about when his final verdict will be issued. His website doesn't work anymore, though....
He has participated in 2 NUE MTB events this year: Cohutta 100 on April 19 where he finished 26th, 1.29.56 back Mohican 100 on May 31st where he did not finish.
This is an older write-up I did about Landis:
After 35 hours, 14 expert testimonies, and 10 supplementary testimonies, Floyd Landis’s appeal hearing before the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS) concluded Monday, March 24. CAS, the Swiss-based international arbitration body, conducted the hearing in a Manhattan, New York law firm. The three-panel CAS board is comprised of David Williamsof New Zealand, Jan Paulsson of Paris, and David Rivkin of New York. Landis is hoping they will overturn the American Arbitration Association’s two-one ruling against him, but he will have to wait until June to hear the results. Post hearing submissions from both sides are due by April 18. Last May, Landis and his attorney, Maurice Suh, faced a nine-day hearing before the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) panel of Canadian attorneys Richard McLaren and Patrice Brunet, and Boston-based lawyer Chris Campbell. On September 20, 2007, a 2-1 ruling was issued against Landis, stripping him of his 2006 Tour de France title and suspending him from racing for two years. On October 10, Landis announced his plans to appeal these results.
So far, Landis has spent around $2 million fighting allegations that he doped to achieve victory in the 2006 Tour de France. In that Tour, Landis lost the yellow leader’s jersey to Spanish rider Oscar Pereiro on Stage 16. The next day, Landis launched a legendary attack ofof over 120 kilometers, winning Stage 17. This moved him to third place overall, just 30 seconds off Pereiro’s lead. His third place finish on Stage 19’s time trial clenched him the overall victory for the race. On July 27, however, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced that a rider had tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. That same day, Landis’s team, Phonak Hearing Systems, confirmed that he had tested positive for an 11:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio following his Stage 17 victory (exceeding the allowed 4:1 T/E ratio). His “B” sample confirmed these findings on August 5.
Since then, Landis has rallied to prove his innocence. After numerous town-hall meetings, an extensive power point presentation, and various legal arguments, Landis ultimately blamed mistakes made by the National Laboratory for Doping Detection (LNDD), the French government’s anti-doping laboratory that conducted his tests. He asserts that technical mistakes were made during the testing procedures, resulting in his false-positive results. The USADA did identify several areas where LNDD’s handling of the test samples was improper, but carbon-ratio isotope tests, according to the USADA, ultimately outweighed those flaws.
Currently, Landis is suspended from cycling through January 29, 2009. He also faces an additional 2-year ban from riding in any Pro-Tour races. For the next few months, CAS will study presentations and evidence submissions. Landis will have to wait to hear if his suspension hold or if his rallying has succeed.

Thx for infos. I thought there was no problem for him to go in non Pro tour team and hoped that we would see him at least in Giro.

I agree that he should have admitted or at least not making circus about french labs, but in TDF 2007 there was max 5-10% clean riders, the year before a percentage of clean riders was even lower. I belive hardly anyone was completely clean. So Landis was not worse than others, just not so lucky. He has made some stupid decisions after positive test, but that doesnt change the fact that he is impressive rider and interesting, fun character.

He is a fun character--nice when I met him 3 weeks after 06 Tour.
I've always kinds wondered why he'd spend so incredibly much money (almost going bankrupt) to clear his name when i he had just admitted to it, he could be riding non-Pro by now probably (or very, very soon, anyways).
I'd say it'll be interesting to hear what the appeal says, but a) we know what they're going to say and b) most people will think he merely got off for legalistic reasons and not because he was innocent.

New status in Operation Oil For Drugs (2001-2004)! During the last year, this post has been updated a couple of times. Here in November 2008 its time for a new update, in order to report on the latest developments. CONI+FCI+TNA are still working to solve the last cases, but have now completed a judgement for 83 persons! We had to wait 4 long years for justice to be done, so its a big relief it now finaly happens. To sum up the case, its about an Italian doping network managed by Dr.Santuccione, that got dismantled in 2004. The Italian civil court accused these 138 persons:
15 riders, 77 amateur riders, 7 athletes, 9 sports directors from amateur teams, 2 doctors, 9 network leaders, 9 nurses, and 5 pharmacists.
The doping network was managed by 2 doctors and 9 "network leaders", and was primarily located in the areas Toscana, Lazio and Abruzzo. Doping was supplied by the 5 implicated pharmacists. But also a group of implicated nurses, working nearby at public hospitals, supplied the network with illegal medicine and blood doping equipment. Products was normaly traded by phone, and the network had developed this code language:
"Roba" ment EPO. "A box with honey" also ment EPO. "The green product" was yet another code for EPO. "30 wheels and 40 spokes" ment 30 vials of 40,000 EPO units. "W" ment the anabolic steriod Winstroll. "Envelopes" ment blood bags. "Small cakes" ment testosterone. "Pencils" was the code for Amphetamines. "Lulu" ment the hormone product Lutrelef. "Il Grande Fratello" (the big brother) ment the insuline product IGF.
Other doping products consumed by the riders, were for instance: NESP, growth hormones, Synachten, nandrolone, gonadotropina, and cortisones. Finaly also a very bizarre product, was seized by the police at the home of Zoltan Bebto: 30 vials containing “natural human growth hormone”, extracted directly from hypophysis of the dead human bodies at hospitals (to be undetectable by doping controls)!
So far there are no details about how many riders were involved with blood doping, but it has been proofed by the police, that at least Alessio Galletti recieved this treatment, with help from Maurizio Balestri and medical assistence from the nurce Alessandro Orsetti, who worked at a nearby hospital. Galletti by the way died 15/6/2005 on his bike, apparently suffering a heart attack. Also an amateur rider being an active client of the doping network, died under similair circumstances in 2004, underlining the high risk of doping.
Italian police (NAS), got informed about the network in Dec.2002, where Marco Mosè Baccin (sports director of the cycling team Sintofarm) confessed that he had used a doping network for his team, with "mediation" of the FCI councilman Camerini, and administration of the prohibited substances from Dr.Santuccione. This confession started a long and effective police investigation. In May 2004 the police did a giant raid at 140 locations in 28 cities. The evidence against implicated athletes consists of seized products+documents, video surveilance, and recorded phone conversations (where they order doping and get instructed how to consume products "the right way", to stay undetected by doping controls). Regarding the riders Di Luca and Mazzoleni, a transcript of their phone calls have already been printed, and it looks very clear, that they in 2004 used several doping products from Dr.Santuccione. Moreover, a recorded phone conversation between Mazzoleni and Dr.Santuccione, reveals a system, where the doping testers and the FCI manager Camerini, in advance inform Dr.Santuccione about any surprise tests, so that he can alert the riders to skip the doping in that particulair week.
The case in civil court, was according to Italian law parted into 12 different courts, according to the fysical residense of the involved persons. Unfortunately this also slowed down arbitration of the case. Only in May 2007, CONI recieved the final investigation report on 16000 pages from the civil court (who by the way, only will finish the judgment about prison time in Oct.2008). Since May 2007, CONI has slowly worked through all the court papers, and they released a note at their website each time an implicated person had been judged. CONI also published all TNA decisions with all details in each case, right here: www.coni.it/index.php?2379. It took many hours to read through all this material. So for your convenience, I decided to summarize all the cases and decisions in this post. Others: V.Freudiani (nurce/doping supplier), F.Macchi (handicap rider), C.Lombardi (roller skater), F.Fiacconi (marathoner)
* Explanation about FCI/TNA/CAS: In all Italian doping cases the first step will be, that the CONI prosecutor investigate the athlete, and then make his judged recommendation about suspensions to the national federations (eg. the Italian Cycling Federation, FCI). The court at FCI is named “Commissione d’Appello Federale” (CAF), and normaly riders have to wait 3-6 months after the judgement from the CONI prosecutor, to get their case judged by CAF. If the judgement from CAF gets appealed, then the Tribunale Nazionale Antidoping (TNA -formerly known as GUI) will make the final judgement after 1-2 additional months. Finaly the parties have the last option to appeal the TNA decision for final arbitration at the international sports court (CAS), where the definitive judgement normaly arrives after 6 additional months. All international athletes, or persons who dont belong to an Italian federation, will get their case transfered directly from the CONI prosecutor to TNA.
**Explanation about the short 3 month suspension for Danilo Di Luca: Di Luca has admitted to be client of Dr.Santuccione in 1997-2004, where he frequently consulted him as his personal doctor. The doctor was however suspended for doing any practise in Italy from 1995-2000, as punishment for leading a doping network in the early 90s. Since this suspensension was not respected by the doctor and Di Luca in 1997, it has in principal been prolounged for each year afterwords (with 3 year remaining). Since Dr.Santuccione therefor never had served his suspension time, he consequently never got renewed his license to treat athletes in the Italian Cyling Federation. CAS ruled to be exact, that Di Lucca was suspended 3 months for frequenting a doctor without an approved license, and according to Italian law, this violation can be punished with everything from 1-6 months (and uptil 18 months if repeated again after the riders first suspension). Finaly, Di Luca unfortunately hadnt been formaly accused by CONI for "attempted doping use", and therefor CAS was not legally allowed to judge if Di Luca had violated that paragraph, and consequently could only convict him guilty of the more mild violation: "to frequent a doctor without a license".
***Explanation about the short 6 month suspension for Ruggero Marzoli: The CONI prosecutor evaluated Marzolis case to be an "attempted doping use", and therefor asked for life time suspension (since it was a second time offence committed by the rider). However this decision was appealed by Marzoli, and the final judgement by Tribunale Nazionale Antidoping (TNA) only resulted in a suspension for 6 months (for getting treatment by a doping suspended doctor)! In the verdict it was outlined, that in spite of tapped telephone conversations and several visits by the rider at Dr.Santucciones office in 2004, there was not enough evidense to proof the assumption of "attempted doping use". The problem was, that the conversations only revealed evidense with certainty, that the rider was using the product called Pro HGH (also known as symbiotropin). This product was described as working to increase concentrations of Growth Hormones in the body, but since the product had been under no official scientifical studies for this effect, the product was not illegal for the athlete to use (at least in 2004)!
To be honest, I got curious to know if this argument in the official verdict really could be true. So I looked up the product on the Internet, and actualy succeded to find a site selling the product: http://store.bodybuildingfactory.com/basic-research-endothil-cr-30t.html. The website gives a product description, that it boost your level of Growth Hormones in the body, while still being legal to use within WADA/IOC rules! At the moment I dont know for sure, wether or not this product actualy works, or if its still possible to use within the WADA rules. Anyway, I think it gives a rather interesting picture, of how easy it is for athletes to buy such substances with an alleged strong doping effect. And eventhough the case against Marzoli actualy proofed he used this product, he easily got away with his intention to dope, since the product was not written on WADAs illegal doping list back in 2004! |

Organised doping at LA Aluminios-MSS (a continental team from Portugal) Eventhough most teams and countries are slowly changing for the better, in regards of the fight against doping. We still have some dark spots in the Cycling World. The Portuguese Antidopingbrigade (CNAD) recently confirmed, that doping products (Growth hormones, epo, a centrifugal machine for blood, and other illegal substances), had been found after searchings in the building of LA Aluminios-MSS. At further searchings, they also found some cooled blood bags belonging to minimum 2 riders! The team by the way made their name famous already last year, where they hired two riders implicated in Operation Puerto (Vicioso and Zaballa). This again proofs, that the circumstances surounding a team, often indicates whats truly going on behind the curtains.
www.wvcycling.com/bericht/1638
Update: The Portoguese Cycling Federation has now suspended these 4 staff members and 5 riders from LA Aluminios:
Luis Almeida (team manager) Manuel Zeferino (sports director) Paulo Silva (soigneur) Marcos Marino Maynar (doctor) Pedro Cardoso Afonso Azevedo Claudio Faria Tiago Silva Rogerio Batista
Testosterone test doesnt work on athletes from Asia! A new WADA study shows, that 10% of Europeans and 67% of Asians have been born with a special gene, that causes a non secretion of testosterone in Urine samples. So all athletes with the special gene can dope with testosterone, without getting caught by urine samples! Currently UCI is using a cheap screening test based on urine samples, to indicate wether or not to perform a more expensive testosterone test. In my point of view, they should start testing all riders with the expensive testosterone test, in order to avoid the problem discriped above. With the Olympics in China soon around the corner, we can only hope the responsible organisations, will start to perform the more expensive test on all the athletes.

Final CAS verdict has arrived in the Landis case As I have stated earlier, there was no need to waste any more time or energy to discuss the Landis case. Just as expected, CAS today dismissed the appeal, and confirmed the 2 year suspension of Landis (expiring Jan.2009). Moreover Landis was ordered to pay $100,000 to USADA to cover the cost for the appeal case. In top of that, the WADA president today announced, that he consider to file a lawsuit against Landis to cover all of WADAs expenditures in the case ($1.3 million)!
Basicly the entire Landis defense has been a huge waste of time and money. Had he just admitted from day one, we could all forgive him by now. Instead he chose to make a silly public campaign, and cause unrepairable damage to the Cycling World! In my point of view, the behaviour of Landis after he got caught, actualy caused more damage, compared to the fact that he doped.
Some might have been illusioned about the Landis campaign. For instance he claimed, that the 2-1 verdict from USADA was a proof of the uncertainty in his case. As I have pointed out earlier, its however rather normal for a guilty rider to recieve a 2-1 vote in USA, since 1 judge has been selected by the rider, 1 judge by the prosecutor, and the finaly neutral judge is selected by the court. Even when Tyler Hamilton was convicted guilty by USADA (with the crazy explanation about his "unborn twin" causing the positive test), we also had a 2-1 verdict.
Here is the CAS verdict of 58 pages: http://www.tas-cas.org/d2wfiles/document/1418/5048/0/Award_Final_Landis_2008.06.30.pdf
Plus an important quote from the verdict (page 55): "Although the Appellant (Floyd Landis) had the right to pursue a comprehensive de novo appeal in such an important matter, all of its multiple defenses have been rejected as unfounded. All that the Apellant has established after a wide-ranging attack on the LNDD laboratorium, is that there were some minor procedural imperfections. This was not surprising, in view of the unprecedented scope and intensity of the technical challenges, made against LNDD by the Appellant and his witnesses."

KD teammate, tell me, why would Landis admit something for what he wasnt responsible? Why would he take over the responsibility knowing how corrupt the whole system is? Ullrich, Cancellara, Simoni, they all told us that the real problem are those who are above riders. Those who speak( and admit "their guilt") are thrown out of the sport. Jaksche, Sinkewitz are last two examples.. Im sure you cauhgt what happened with Basso- the guy who has been lying all the way will end as UCI spokeman for doping!! The message from UCI for next convicted riders is clear; dont say a word of how things works inside the sport, it also helps a lot if you say " I am not perfect" and actually not admitting to dope. Unfortunately doping is well accepted and will always be a part of cycling- and not only cycling, Im sure in sports like football a lot more money is invested in dirty things. |
